iMinder: Hiveminder To Do Client for the iPhone

Pending Task List ScreenshotI wrote a task manager app for the iPhone called iMinder.  It’s free; go check it out on iTunes.

Let’s get this out of the way quickly: Why write another task manager when there are so many iPhone task managers already?  I have used the web-based task manager Hiveminder.com for years to track my to-dos.  I found no iPhone clients for Hiveminder when I looked.  Hiveminder has an API, and I wanted to give iPhone development a shot, so I wrote my own.  It’s not intended to clobber other iPhone task managers, its purpose is to let users access their tasks and sync them with Hiveminder.  And no, its icon does not include a checkmark (cf. 1 and 2).

iMinder does what you’d expect when it comes to creating tasks, setting due dates, and yes, tagging them.  It also lets you tap into some advanced functionality: tasks not only have Due Dates, they also have Hide Until dates, just like on Hiveminder.  You will not see any tasks appear in your task list before that task’s Hide Until date, which helps keep you focused by keeping your task list uncluttered.

Tasks also have dependencies in the form of “But First” and “And Then” tasks (just like on Hiveminder).  You might have three tasks, say, Make Address List, Write Invitations and Mail Invitations.  It does not make sense to Mail Invitations until after Write Invitations is done, so why show it on your To Do list until that point?  When Write invitations is added as a “But First” task for Mail Invitations, this happens.  The same goes for Make Address list Address List if it is added as a “But First” task for Write Invitations.

Finally, the app syncs your tasks with Hiveminder.com (which requires a free Hiveminder account).  Having your tasks on Hiveminder lets you access them via the Hiveminder web interface (which offers much more functionality than the app does, including assigning of tasks to others, task review, creating repeating tasks, and searching).  Plus, you can access tasks via IM and email.  And with sync you also get a backup of your tasks in case your lose your iPhone/iPod Touch.

If this sounds like something you would find useful, check it out.  As mentioned above, it is free and available for iPhone and iPod Touch on the App store.

Feedback is appreciated.  Feel free to send email (iminder at worldairmaillinks.com), click the “Feedback” tab at left or use the Get Satisfaction iMinder support area.

Thanks to those who beta tested, to those two people who independently suggested the name (thanks Felix and Jordan!), and thanks to the folks who make Hiveminder.
