    iMinder 2.0 Now Available

iMinder 2.0 is now available (for free) on the iTunes App Store.  iMinder is an iPhone to-do app which syncs with todo-list service Hiveminder.

The biggest change in version 2 is the addition of multiple task lists.  In addition to a list of pending tasks like in version 1 (now labelled “To Do” in version 2), you can also see lists of tasks Due Today, Due Tomorrow, Overdue, Done, and Hidden.  And lists of tasks by tag, an often requested feature, are also available.

There are many more minor enhancements and extensions, like the ability to add and edit notes for a task (version 1 users should see the app download notes for existing tasks during their version sync using 2.0).  Tasks can now be hidden forever, just like in the Hiveminder web interface.  iMinder supports shake-to-undo for many actions — accidentally check a task off your list?  Shake your phone to restore it.  (Keep in mind that you will still have to sync .)

Other minor additions include landscape mode (which might be especially helpful for entering task summaries and notes), choosing existing tasks from the pending task list as But First/And Then tasks, removing But First/And Then dependencies between tasks, and deleting a tag completely from the app.

Want to check it out?  See more screenshots and download it for free from the App Store.

Thanks to testers for the feedback, and thanks to Joseph Wain for the free Glyphish icons.

Seeking Beta Testers for iMinder 2.0

Would you like to help test out iMinder 2.0?  There are plenty of new features, and beta testing will decrease the chances of nasty bugs when it is eventually released via the App Store.

If you would like to be a beta tester, please send the UUID of your iPhone or iPod Touch to iminder-beta at worldairmaillinks dot com. (Here are instructions on how to obtain your device’s UUID from the blog of another app which include a bonus explanation of why the UUID is needed for testing.)

If you helped beta test the original, there is no need to email again to be part of the 2.0 beta.

iMinder 1.0.3 is now available on the iTunes App Store.  In this version is just one change: a fix to a bug where “Hidden Forever” tasks are still displayed.

    Update — version 1.0.2 released

iMinder 1.0.2 is now available on the iTunes App Store.  It contains one significant bugfix and some other rather minor changes:

    • Declined tasks should no longer appear in the task list (thanks for the bug report, @nelhage)
    • Selecting a priority automatically dismisses the Edit Priority view
    • Minor cosmetic changes (some application text that was previously black is now blue/gray)

If you see any problems, please report them.

Meanwhile, work contunies on version 1.1 but there is no ETA yet

Minor update — version 1.0.1 released

iMinder version 1.0.1 is now available on the iTunes App Store.  This new version is a minor update with just a few changes:

    • Removed auto-delete of unused tags, since users might want to use them again later.  (This might still lead to too many tags.  Perhaps there should be the ability to manually delete tags in a future version.)
    • Fixed a bug where the badge number on the iMinder icon did not match the real number of tasks in certain situations
    • The checkmark looks slightly different when a task is highlighted

I wanted to get this release out to allow me to work on version 1.1, which is going to feature some more significant changes.

iMinder: Hiveminder To Do Client for the iPhone

Pending Task List ScreenshotI wrote a task manager app for the iPhone called iMinder.  It’s free; go check it out on iTunes.

Let’s get this out of the way quickly: Why write another task manager when there are so many iPhone task managers already?  I have used the web-based task manager Hiveminder.com for years to track my to-dos.  I found no iPhone clients for Hiveminder when I looked.  Hiveminder has an API, and I wanted to give iPhone development a shot, so I wrote my own.  It’s not intended to clobber other iPhone task managers, its purpose is to let users access their tasks and sync them with Hiveminder.  And no, its icon does not include a checkmark (cf. 1 and 2).

iMinder does what you’d expect when it comes to creating tasks, setting due dates, and yes, tagging them.  It also lets you tap into some advanced functionality: tasks not only have Due Dates, they also have Hide Until dates, just like on Hiveminder.  You will not see any tasks appear in your task list before that task’s Hide Until date, which helps keep you focused by keeping your task list uncluttered.

Tasks also have dependencies in the form of “But First” and “And Then” tasks (just like on Hiveminder).  You might have three tasks, say, Make Address List, Write Invitations and Mail Invitations.  It does not make sense to Mail Invitations until after Write Invitations is done, so why show it on your To Do list until that point?  When Write invitations is added as a “But First” task for Mail Invitations, this happens.  The same goes for Make Address list Address List if it is added as a “But First” task for Write Invitations.

Finally, the app syncs your tasks with Hiveminder.com (which requires a free Hiveminder account).  Having your tasks on Hiveminder lets you access them via the Hiveminder web interface (which offers much more functionality than the app does, including assigning of tasks to others, task review, creating repeating tasks, and searching).  Plus, you can access tasks via IM and email.  And with sync you also get a backup of your tasks in case your lose your iPhone/iPod Touch.

If this sounds like something you would find useful, check it out.  As mentioned above, it is free and available for iPhone and iPod Touch on the App store.

Feedback is appreciated.  Feel free to send email (iminder at worldairmaillinks.com), click the “Feedback” tab at left or use the Get Satisfaction iMinder support area.

Thanks to those who beta tested, to those two people who independently suggested the name (thanks Felix and Jordan!), and thanks to the folks who make Hiveminder.
